Although it is not obvious, as it is not often publicly placed on the market, church buildings and property are bought and sold as often as any other property. Congregations grow, downsize and move as much as anyone.

If you are looking to buy a church building to function as a church, you will want to consider:

• How many people you want to be able to accommodate.
• Do you want a 50-seat church or a very large church?
• Do you need a car park attached to your church?
• How close do you want to be to a large community?
• Specific community?
• Public transport?
• What’s your price range? ($1 million? $50 million?)
• What additional facilities do you require? Church hall? Additional rooms for study/offices? Kitchen? School, day care or creche?
• How important is the architectural character of the church?

On the other hand, you might be looking for space for other purposes. Are you interested in repurposing a church? Are you wanting land where it’s hard to find and would consider a demolition project?
